A sinking incident in 1997 caused an enormous oil spill on the coast of the Sea of Japan. Nayomi Oi, an environmentally-conscious surf shop owner joined forces with local communities to remove the oil and huge amounts of waste. Since then, she has led volunteers in removing plastic bottles and other garbage, coming from other countries, from the beaches of Fukui Prefecture to create a better marine environment for future generations. | Japan - The Government of Japan
